Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is one of the largest acute Trusts in the UK, employing over 28,000 staff.

We are responsible for running a family of ten hospitals across seven separate sites, providing a wide range of services from comprehensive local general hospital care through to highly specialised regional and national services.

We are the main provider of hospital care to approximately 750,000 people in Manchester and Trafford and the single biggest provider of specialised services in the North West of England. We are also the lead provider for a significant number of specialised services including Breast Care, Vascular, Cardiac, Respiratory, Urology Cancer, Paediatrics, Women’s Services, Ophthalmology and Genomic Medicine.

Our vision is to improve the health and quality of life of our diverse population by building an organisation that:

  • Excels in quality, safety, patient experience, research, innovation and teaching
  • Attracts, develops and retains great people
  • Is recognised internationally as a leading healthcare provider.

Enhance the experiences of crisis care for children and young people in Greater Manchester

As England’s largest NHS Trust, our size and scope mean you’ll gain exposure to a variety of complex cases and support that will be hard to find at other Trusts. Although the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has continually rated our CAMHS services as outstanding, we know there’s still more we can do. As we expand our service, we need people like you to support us in continuing to improve the outcomes and experiences for children and young people in Greater Manchester.

About us

The NHS Long Term Plan aims to provide all children and young people experiencing a mental health crisis with access to age-appropriate crisis care by 2023/24. Available 24/7 through NHS 111, it combines rapid crisis assessment, brief response and intensive home-treatment functions. To help us achieve this goal at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), we’re developing and implementing a crisis care offer to support children, young people (CYP) and those who care for them - to remain in their own home and aid their recovery during and after the crisis episode.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to transform the way in which crisis care is experienced by CYP and those who care for them across Greater Manchester. The role will involve working alongside colleagues in the Rapid Response Teams (RRT) to contribute to assessment and management of crisis presentations. And you’ll need to do this within a clear and structured Risk Assessment and Risk Reduction framework.

You’ll be supporting families to offer containment and care under the supervision of mental health professionals. You’ll also work intensively with CYP and those who care for them for up to 72 hours, under the supervision of senior staff. A big part of your role will also be developing ongoing relationships with children and families to promote resilience and reduce the likelihood of future crisis episodes.

About you

It’s essential that you have a National Youth Agency accredited Youth Work qualification, or Graduate Diploma in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Practice. You’ll also have experience of working with, and offering advice and support to, CYP and/or families. Plus, you’ll have an awareness and understanding of mental health and emotional issues, including self-harm and suicide.

It’s also important that you have a high level of emotional resilience, so you can keep thinking and performing well under pressure. You should also be able to prioritise your work, and be flexible to meet the demands of the service. It’s also essential that you have the ability to act calmly in emergencies and can respond to stressful and challenging behaviour in a professional manner.

Developing your career with us

We want our people to thrive in their roles at MFT. So we’re passionate about your personal development. You’ll get all the support you need to deliver the best care you can. Plus, you’ll get specialist training in the interventions that support people when in crisis.

We’re also deeply committed to innovation. So you can be sure you’re gaining experience at the leading-edge of Child and Adolescent Mental Health. We’re always looking to develop new ways of working and improve teamwork. So we provide regular training opportunities that focus on this, too.

Working within a supportive team and with the chance to really develop your own skills in role, you’ll witness your work having a direct impact on the lives of thousands of children and young people across Manchester, Trafford and Salford.  Join an organisation and a hospital that’s as ambitious as you are. We offer unparalleled career opportunities and a great work-life balance in one of the country’s most exciting cities.  For an informal conversation or to simply find out more contact Al Ford e: al.ford@mft.nhs.uk
