Independent Committee Member – Safeguarding

Voluntary position

Time commitment: roughly 0.5 days per month

Three-year term

Flexible location

Young Lives vs Cancer exists so that no family has to face cancer alone. We want to be an organisation that is committed to transparency, accountability and the highest standards of governance.

We are looking for someone with experience and expertise in safeguarding adults to be a Volunteer Independent Committee Member of the Safeguarding Committee – part of our governance arrangements - for a term of three years.

You will be joining Team Young Lives, a 900 strong volunteer team, passionate staff team and army of supporters that enable us to be there for children and young people with cancer. You will work closely with a passionate and ambitious Board and Executive who believe children and young people with cancer and their families should have the same opportunities as anyone else. You will help Young Lives vs Cancer to thrive so that families do not face cancer alone.

The Safeguarding Committee supports the Board with:

  • Ensuring that Young Lives vs Cancer protects and promotes the welfare of the children, young people and vulnerable adults using services, receiving services or volunteering
  • Ensuring Young Lives vs Cancer trustees, staff and volunteers to fulfil their statutory responsibilities for safeguarding.

We are looking for someone with experience and expertise in safeguarding adults (ideally young adults, within the 18-30 age range) and ideally currently working in this field – although this could be in a range of different roles. You may have experience of transition planning for vulnerable young adults. You will have passion and expertise in your field, and you will have the ability to use your experience to contribute to the success of the Committee.

You’ll show commitment and passion for what we do and be willing to devote the time and energy needed (around half a day a month), but you do not need to have served on a committee before and knowledge or experience of the charity sector is not essential, we can help you develop these skills.

You will live our values – being brave and confident, having integrity and being part of Team Young Lives - while bringing your own unique voice and self to the committee.

At Young Lives vs Cancer we recognise that opportunities for too many people remain a condition of their race, class, sex, disability, sexual orientation – or a combination. This has never been acceptable to us as an organisation. At Young Lives vs Cancer we don’t just accept difference — we value it, we celebrate it, we nurture it, and we thrive off it. We positively welcome your application irrespective of your background.

We are on a journey, and if you join us you will be part of a community that is committed make a difference to the lives of children and young people with.
