Join us as a Youth Justice Custody Officer and make a difference to children and young people. We are transforming our workforce and we want you to help us on this journey. We’re looking for people to join our team who care for children and young people at one of Britain’s biggest prisons, HMP & YOI Parc in Bridgend, South Wales.

The Youth Justice Custody Officer is a new and innovative adaption of the Prison Custody Officer role. Specific to working within youth custody and will be a driving force for changing the way in which children and young people are cared for in custody.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Youth Justice Custody Officer, you will support children and young people, setting boundaries and creating a safe, decent and secure environment. You will take responsibility for the personal, social and emotional development of children and young people, whilst building constructive and motivational relationships that bring about positive change.

About you

Working with children and young people is challenging, you need to have the patience and resilience to form a trusting relationship with a child or young person.  We are looking for people who have a special talent in helping, who can listen and see the potential in the people in our care.

You will have a proven aptitude for working with children and young people in a supportive, educational or similar role and have the desire to see them build a better future for themselves.

It is imperative that you consider yourself to be effective and resilient under pressure and ready to manage the ever changing dynamic of working with young people, many of whom may have a history of unpredictable behaviour. This can, at times feel challenging to manage, and whilst we pride ourselves on team work and support, it is important to acknowledge that this can be a high pressured environment.

You will initially join us and train as a Prison Custody Officer and then once in post, will undertake specialist training to ensure you are equipped to work with children and young people. On completion of the probationary period, successful candidates will have the opportunity to study for a Level 4 qualification in Youth Justice. If you successfully complete the programme, you will qualify and progress as a Youth Justice Custody Officer and receive a financial allowance for doing so.

You must be eligible to work in the UK and must have been resident in the UK for a minimum period of 3 years. You will also need to provide full details of your employment and education history for the last 5 years as part of the security screening process for this role.
