HM Inspectorate of Probation

2 x short-term placements – inspection of YOS delivery for black, Asian and minority ethnic children and staff

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation is the independent inspector of youth offending and probation services in England and Wales.

The Inspectorate carries out many thematic inspections examining different aspects of work with adults and/or children. We are offering two opportunities to join our team on secondment for up to eight weeks over a six-month timeframe to help plan, carry out and record inspection findings.

We are seeking someone with in-depth operational and strategic experience of youth offending service delivery specifically for black, Asian and ethnic minority children and staff. They should also be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of the issues facing these children and staff.

Inspection fieldwork will take place over five weeks during February and March 2021 and there is an expectation that the candidates will be available for all fieldwork. The placement start date will be confirmed with the successful candidate. We particularly welcome applications from black, Asian and minority ethnic applicants who are underrepresented in our workforce.

Short-term placements provide an excellent opportunity to learn about inspection, gain more knowledge about the inspection topic and contribute to improving practice. Guidance will be provided in inspection skills and procedures.

Please note that in view of the COVID-19 pandemic the way we conduct the inspection will be kept under regular review and guided by national public health advice and risk assessment. Inspections usually involve frequent travel and overnight stays away from home for which travel and subsistence payments will be made to cover transport and overnight stay costs. However, depending on the situation at the time, remote working methods may need to be used.

For further details of the post, including the application and selection procedure, please see visit HM Inspectorate of Probation’s website. Candidates will need to have secured their managers agreement to release them to join the inspection team before applying.
