Perinatal & Under 1’s Worker

Locations: Broxbourne District and Welwyn/Hatfield District.

Hours: 37.5 per week

Family Centres are places where children under 11 years old and their families can receive seamless integrated services and information. It is also where they can access help from a range of multi-disciplinary teams of professionals.

The post-holder will work in assigned Family Centre(s) providing support to the District Manager in the delivery of a high-quality service.


The primary focus of the role is the provision of a range of engagement activities, information support and advice to families, both at the Family Centre hub and other sites within the community, including home visits. The post holder is expected to have a `hands-on’ approach to the delivery of services.

The key elements of the post are to:
a) Promote the engagement of parents and families ante-natally and post-natally in the services and support available to them, through the Family Support Service and other agencies, with a particular focus on the more vulnerable families in the community.
b) Contribute to targeted information, support and advice to families identified by the centre and partner agencies such as Public Health and Social Care. This work will include one-to-one work, home visiting and group work as appropriate to meet the needs of the families.
c) Participate in the preparation and delivery of ante-natal programmes for first-time parents and those identified as a priority.
d) Work towards and achieve the agreed Key Performance Indicators and performance objectives and ensure a high level of service is provided at all times.

Essential Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in health, social care or early years or Work With Parents Level 3 award
  • Knowledge of the role and services provided by other agencies and professionals in relation to ante-natal and post-natal care
  • Knowledge of the support and development needs of children from birth and the importance of empowering parents to support their child’s health, wellbeing and development.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering elements of the Healthy Child Programme
  • Recognised parenting programme qualifications and experience of delivering (or willingness to work towards)
  • Experience of home visiting
  • Understanding of the issues faced by diverse communities and barriers to inclusion
  • Knowledge of the Early Help Assessment framework, Child Protection Procedures and Safeguarding (or equivalent)
  • Safeguarding Training at Level 2 or equivalent
  • Experience of multi-agency working
  • Experience of developing positive working relationships with a range of service users, including those who traditionally do not access services
