District Youth and Community Based Commissioner

JNC Qualified SCP 17 (£28,017) up to SCP 20 (£30,318)

Location: Based in Harlow, covering the West Essex area, mostly working across Uttlesford district

Transform young lives with your visionary ideas

At Essex County Council, we are focussed on investing in the young people who will be such an important part in our future. The way in which we support them now, will ultimately impact on the adults that they grow up to be – which is where you come in.

This is a unique opportunity to explore your boldest ideas, to craft creative services for young people who live in rural communities in West Essex and work with young people and communities to develop youth work projects.  Many of these areas are quite remote, with sporadic public transport links. We want to ensure these young people have somewhere safe and inspirational to go after school and at the weekends.

You will have plenty of support to get your ideas off the ground, building on our recently-conducted interviews with young people in which we asked what types of services they want. Their responses have provided us with an excellent base from which to work, so you will have our full support as you embed yourself in each community, and design services that will enhance their social skills and understanding of the world.

Every day will present you with new challenges, such as training members of the extended team, and assessing risks associated with your proposed activities. You will therefore excel in this role if:

  • You have experience of developing services for young people (in either a professional or voluntary context) and are passionate about working with young people in rural communities.
  • You have a JNC recognised Youth Work qualification (essential)
  • You are able to work flexibly (including evenings, weekends and residentials), with your own car and a full driving license.
  • You have exceptional communication, influencing and motivational skills, with the capacity to provide persuasive reports and presentations.
  • You are a team-player who is committed to challenging prejudice and ignorance.
