We’re on a mission to revolutionise education! Beyond the classroom is a youth led education social enterprise. We deliver innovative life-skills programmes to young people, with an emphasis on the performing arts, youth leadership and peer-mentoring.

We deliver effective, evidence-based programmes to equip young people with the knowledge and tools they need to be leaders of their own lives and communities. We currently have a focus on supporting young people from low-income and minority ethnic backgrounds aged 11 to 19.  At our core, is a belief in the absolute importance of social mobility and a knowledge that young people are the solution to many of our society’s challenges, not the problem!

Our programmes fit into two thematic areas – Relationships & Wellbeing and Careers & Leadership.

 

Person Specification

Are you passionate about empowering young people (particularly young women) to make positive change through the performing arts? Do you aspire to be a positive, relatable and inspiring role model for young women? If so, this position is for you!

This position is ideal for an individual with experience of working in schools and or with young people. You will work directly with young people, school staff and business professionals, representing the principal link between direct programme delivery and head office operations, providing support to both. You will also lead our efforts to leverage the creativity and youth voice accessed through programme delivery, in order to: lead  the development of our train the trainer programmes with in-school staff; as well as using young people’s experiences to enrich our online marketing and communications materials.

You will share the team’s passion for youth empowerment, social enterprise and be looking to apply your skills and experience to this area. You should have a proven commitment to this area of work, demonstrated through at least two years’ previous full-time, part-time and / or voluntary experience within a similar role.

You will thrive in a small, creative and resourceful team and be willing to work flexibly within your role. The role

This is a varied and exciting role, your time will be split between direct facilitation work with groups of young people in schools, as well as joining us in our South London office to support the operations and administration of our work. This position involves working to drive the organisation forward at a crucial time of growth, developing our train the trainer model for scale of impact and delivery. You will be expected to get stuck in at different levels of delivery and operations, in order to achieve results.

 

Curriculum Design

  • Build and deliver training programmes and curriculum content for pastoral staff in schools, based on established BTC content
  • Optimise programme content and design with engaging and innovative tools and techniques
  • Liaise with school staff and facilitate the uptake of BTC programmes

 

Creative Communication

  • Depending on your own skills and interests we are looking for a candidate to support the development of organisational communications in one or more of the following areas: , branding and design.

 

Coordination & administration

  • Provide administrative support to operations team and young people
  • Update databases and produce progress reports for schools and other stakeholders
  • Manage relationships with schools and community partners
  • Any other ad-hoc duties as directed

 

Facilitation

  • Positively impact the decision-making skills and wellbeing of 11 – 19-year-old girls within a school setting.
  • Facilitate an effective and engaging youth programme, to support young women in dealing with sensitive issues within the Girlhood to Womanhood theme (e.g. teenage relationship abuse, peer pressure & low self-esteem). With a strong focus on the use of mentoring and the performing arts.
  • The programme will involve a group of young women using their creativity and personal experience to devise an original piece of performance.  You will be responsible for developing their confidence, self-value and self-esteem throughout this process.

 

The successful applicant will

  • Undertake a full DBS check
  • Have a proven passion for youth development and a strong background in working with young people of diverse backgrounds and needs
  • Openness to learning new skills and gaining new experiences within the BTC model
  • Strong administrative and organisational skills
  • Good leadership skills with an emphasis on collaboration
  • Comfortable in addressing sensitive issues and confident in supporting young people to deal with these issues
  • Reliability and ability to work on own initiative to schedule, and within budget

 

 

Desirable

 

  • Lived experience of the sensitive coming of age issues the programme addresses and happy to use personal experience to inform best practice, only where appropriate
  • An understanding of current education policy
  • Experience delivering Arts Award qualifications
  • Proven passion for the performing Arts and or/film-making
  • Applicants who reflect the diverse make-up of the south London community
  • Qualifications in TIE, social work, youth work
  • Driving licence and access to own car
