Make-A-Wish UK grants life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses.  A wish gives a desperately ill child and their family time away from the daily struggles of living with a serious condition.  Since 1986, Make-A-Wish has turned the wishes of more than 12,000 seriously ill children into realities – creating memories to treasure forever, whatever the future may hold.

We’re looking for someone with great communication skills to share our stories and raise awareness of Make-A-Wish.

You’ll have excellent organisational skills, a can-do approach and will have experience of working with and/or engaging children and young people. You’ll be confident in public speaking, ideally in the youth sector, and be looking for an opportunity to put these skills to good use!

Why we need you

By giving talks in your community, you’ll be raising awareness and spreading the word about Make-A-Wish. These talks can be the first step in building strong, long-term links with schools, community groups and youth groups.

You’ll inform and inspire your audience by introducing Make-A-Wish, the children we work with and talking about the wishes we grant.

What will I be doing?

We’d like you to do a minimum of six talks a year, which may be either day or evening (for example, school assemblies or talks at Brownies/Guides meetings). In order to do so, you’ll be carrying out the following activities:

  • A big part of your role will be carrying out research into youth community groups and schools in your area, so that you can contact them to offer your services as a speaker, giving free talks about Make-A-Wish
  • You’ll have access to our Public Speaker Toolkit, enabling you to deliver bespoke presentations to diverse communities and audiences of all ages
  • Your talks will engage and inspire support for Make-A-Wish and encouraging involvement in our fundraising initiatives such as Bake-A-Wish, Wear What You Wish and Magic Miles
  • You’ll be keeping your talks up to date with the latest Make-A-Wish news, which you can find on our website and volunteer intranet
  • Finally, you’ll be keeping your Regional Fundraising Manager up to date of your activities including the contacts you’ve made and talks that you’ve arranged

You may also be asked to attend cheque presentations and local events on behalf of Make-A-Wish, and/ or on occasion to help us in the granting of wishes in your area, by sharing your local knowledge of suppliers, venues etc.

What skills and attributes do I need?

  • Experience working with children and young people
  • Ability to engage and build relationships with schools, teachers and pupils
  • Have a friendly, positive and outgoing personality
  • Be passionate about the work of Make-A-Wish UK and be able to communicate this in a confident manner to a range of different groups
  • Able to recognise and source speaking opportunities in their communities
  • Have basic computer skills to access emails and use Microsoft Office

Competencies

  • Passion
  • Communication
  • Initiative

How much time do I need to commit?

You need to provide sufficient time to research your talks (this can often be the time consuming bit!) You’ll also need to make time to keep up to date with key messages, fundraising initiatives, latest wishes and news from Make-A-Wish.

You’ll keep in regular contact with your Regional Fundraising Manager and meet at least twice a year.

What support will I be given?

  • Online Volunteer Welcome Induction about Make-A-Wish
  • Training specific to your role and ongoing support will be provided by your Regional Fundraising Manager
  • Access to our online Volunteer Community – WishNet
  • Access to our Public Speaker Toolkit - including handbook and presentation
  • Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses
  • The latest Make-A-Wish news and information to ensure you’re current and up to date

What will I get from volunteering?

  • Meet new people and make new friends in your community
  • Volunteer around your other commitments gaining the satisfaction in knowing you’re making a real difference to the lives of seriously ill children and young people
  • Opportunity to speak publically in front of varied audiences

Where will I be based?

Your research and administration tasks will be carried out at home, but with plenty of opportunities to get out in your community to conduct your talks.
