Are you passionate about helping Hampshire’s most vulnerable young people?
We are looking for dedicated and compassionate staff to join our workforce at Swanwick Lodge, a secure children’s home in the heart of Hampshire. Swanwick Lodge accommodates up to 16 young people aged 11-17 who have been placed in a secure residential setting for their own safety and wellbeing. We provide full care, education and healthcare for young people in line with the ‘secure stairs’ model of care.
You will work as part of a diverse team of carers, providing a highly structured and nurturing environment for young people, many of whom with complex care needs. Your focus will be on creating a safe setting by building positive trusting relationships and acting as a role model to the young people in residence. You will also be involved in leisure and education activities, and work alongside the Wellbeing Team to provide young people with a positive, structured routine.
No formal qualifications are required; you will be provided with the necessary training and support required for the role, as well as opportunities to develop both personal and professional skills.

What does a typical day look like?
As a Residential Care Worker at Swanwick Lodge, your main responsibilities will include:
- Actively promoting and ensuring high standards of physical care, hygiene and safety for all residents
- Establish and sustain positive, professional relationships with residents and their families
- Work with colleagues to assess individual needs of, and develop care plans for all residents
- Manage the behaviour of residents, as appropriate, in line with dedicated policies
- Administer medication in line with departmental policy and procedure
- Assist residents to develop life and social skills, and age appropriate independence
- Provide key primary care tasks for the residents including cooking and laundry
- Attend and contribute to meetings relating to residents, representing the views of the unit and HCC
- Assist residents in contributing to their meetings or represent their views
- Take responsibility for own health and safety and that of others, reporting and responding to any child protection concerns in line with Departmental Procedures
- Maintain accurate records of activities and expenditure reports and contribute information for conferences and reviews
- Initiate and update risk assessments as appropriate
- Keep accurate records of petty cash spending and support residents to manage their finances
- Successfully complete National Care Standards Induction as provided
- Develop knowledge of relevant legislation and client group strategies
What do you need from me?
Essential skills, knowledge and experience:
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the physical, social, emotional and developmental needs and issues of young people
- Experience of working with young people
- Understanding of how to encourage and support young people to achieve independence
- Proven ability to engage and communicate effectively with people with special communication needs
- Ability to attend Team Teach Training and receive full certification as required
- Ability to work as part of a team and understand the need for contribution and flexibility
- Ability to recognise signs of stress in self and others and respond appropriately
- Ability to use initiative to solve day-to-day problems as they arise within given parameters
- Ability to contribute ideas to support the smooth and effective running of the unit.
- Ability to assess risks and take necessary steps to ensure a safe environment
- Possess, or have the ability to develop, basic IT skills
- Understanding of key legislation relevant to children and young people
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Appropriate Diploma Level 3/HNC/City and Guilds Certificate or practical experience in a relevant specialism
What are the working conditions?
- Manual handling of items and people over 15 kg on a daily basis
- Use of Display Screen Equipment (DSE)
- Direct supervision of children, including children with highly complex needs
- Shift work, including weekends and bank holiday, night work (11pm – 6am)
- Potential verbal abuse and/or physical aggression from residents
- Food handling
- Potential biological hazards and/or working with people with infections
- Potential contact with human bodily fluids
