Here at the London Borough of Bexley we are looking to appoint a strategic Head of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities to support us in the delivery of an ambitious improvement plan with improved outcomes for children and young people at the heart of it.
Reporting to the Interim Deputy Director for Educational Achievement & Inclusion you will be responsible for the Council’s statutory assessment service which includes commissioning support for the statutory assessments, SEN transport and independent and out of borough school placements. You will also provide a strategic professional and management lead for a range of services including Educational Psychologists, Early Intervention Team and Specialist Advisory Teachers based within multi-disciplinary integrated teams.
You will have detailed experience of working with children and young people with a wide range of SEN and individual needs. You will ensure confidence and transparency in decision-making, service allocations and quality of provision for those children subject to SEN statutory assessment including those with Education, Health and Care Plans and severe and/or complex SEN requirements. In addition, you will ensure that educational psychology and specialist services practice contributes effectively to improving educational outcomes for children and young people.
You will act as the strategic lead to drive our AEN and SEN interventions for vulnerable children and young people. With a specialism and proven track record in this area you will ensure that developments and policies emerging at a national, regional and local level are identified and influenced at the earliest opportunity. You will then act as the Council’s professional lead in ensuring their implementation at a local level.
You will have extensive experience in successfully monitoring and reviewing performance against statutory requirements, service standards, targets and approved budgets. You will also be able to demonstrate clear successes in leading the commissioning and managing of large complex budgets with evidence of taking corrective action.
We are ambitious for innovation, creative thinking and change. A strong and experienced leader, you will drive an ever relentless focus on high quality experiences for families enabled by strong and dedicated specialist services. You will bring vision, passion, leadership skills and an operational expertise that will facilitate the changes that we are ready to make.
It is an exciting time for us and you will join a strong leadership team which will offer you an ideal opportunity to influence how we organise and deliver our vision.
Within the Council there is a highly developed understanding of the complexity and importance of the work we do. This means that there is wholehearted political and organisational support to deliver the best outcomes for children, young people and families.
It’s a chance to build on existing good practice but we’ll also want you to ask questions and to challenge how things are done. The Council has made a significant investment in Children’s Services and that comes with high expectations. You’ll need to bring a distinct focus on high quality professional practice and an emphasis on effective performance management and leadership oversight. If now is the time for you to join a team that is excited and committed to its next phase of improvement and practice change, then please call us.
Bexley has adopted Signs of Safety as its practice model. This strengths and solution focused ethos of working with families and colleagues is threaded throughout all areas of Children’s Social Care. As part of your role you will work with and embed this practice framework.
