Support Worker

Enable a young person to have the summer of a lifetime - flexible paid roles throughout June - September 2019 with NCS!

Salary: £1,472 - £1,880 per 14-18 day role

Location: Greater London, Surrey, Bucks & Berks, West Midlands, Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and Lancashire.

About the role

Join The Challenge, the UK’s longest-standing provider of NCS, and assist a young person with additional support needs through our summer youth & community programme.

NCS (National Citizen Service) is a government-backed initiative with a mission to equip 15-17 year olds with the confidence, skills and support they need to make a real difference in their communities.

We strive for the NCS programme to be as inclusive as possible, providing additional support and resources to improve accessibility for young people with SEND, behavioural, emotional and/or physical needs.

Support Workers are ‘matched’ to a young person with additional needs throughout their entire NCS journey, assisting and motivating them to participate to their full potential and get the most out of the programme. Depending on the Support Worker’s past experience and skills, they will be providing assistance for learning & engagement (SEND), mental health, physical disabilities, behavioural support and/or personal care.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Pastorally care for the young person, ensuring their consistent health, safety & support on the programme.
  • Working with the Team Mentors to ensure that the assigned young person fully integrates into their team.
  • Adapting activities and curriculum sessions to make them accessible for the young person.
  • Consistently complete the young person’s Support Plan throughout the programme.

Person Specification

  • Extensive experience of directly supporting people with additional needs.
  • Ability to adapt activities or sessions to make them accessible for a range of needs.
  • Ability to understand and follow Safeguarding and Health & Safety policies.
  • Ability to work proactively & independently, within a larger staff team, in order to achieve the best results for the assigned young person.

This partly residential role is perfect for a confident, compassionate and high-energy individual, with extensive experience of supporting a range of access needs. This role may require long working hours and night shifts during the residential weeks of the programme.

The Challenge is committed to safeguarding children and young people.  All post holders are subject to appropriate vetting procedures and a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service check

Company

The Challenge is the UK's leading charity for building a more integrated society. Our mission is to design and deliver programmes that bring different people together to develop their confidence and skills in understanding and connecting with others.

Over the last fifty years, the UK has become much more diverse by age, ethnicity and income. But despite our growing diversity, many of us spend relatively little time with people from different walks of life.

The Challenge is the largest provider of National Citizen Service (NCS), a life-changing initiative that brings together 15 to 17 year olds from different backgrounds. It aims to build their confidence, and to inspire and challenge them to make a difference in their local community. In summer 2016, over 38,000 young people across London, Surrey, Berkshire, the West Midlands, Yorkshire and the North West took part in NCS The Challenge for an intensive three to four-week summer programme.

The programme provides young people with the opportunity to complete personal and team challenges, meet new people and give something back to their communities.

NCS promotes:

●      A more cohesive society by mixing participants from different backgrounds;

●      A more responsible society by supporting young people’s transition into adulthood;

●      A more engaged society by enabling young people to work together to create social action projects in their local communities.

This is achieved through the programme by completing three challenges:

NCS Personal Challenge: Socially mixed teams of young people bond through a week of challenging outdoor activities.

NCS Team Challenge: Teams return home and use their skills to experience serving the local community.

NCS Real Challenge Design: Teams design a social action project to roll out in their local communities. NCS Real Challenge Action: The young people take their social action projects to the streets and campaign with the general public.

By taking part, young people learn new skills and have a great experience that can be referenced in their CVs or in further education applications and all young people who complete NCS The Challenge graduate from our programme and are signposted into year-round volunteering, membership and social engagement opportunities through The Challenge.

The Challenge are looking to employ over 4,500 people to work on this year’s NCS programme. We have a range of roles that are suitable to people of all abilities and experiences. For more information or to apply, visit ncsthechallenge.org/jobs
