Job Title: Youth Development Manager
Contract: Permanent
Hours: 37.5 hrs per week (including evening and occasional weekend work)
Pay: £32- 36K + 8% pension
Holiday: 4 weeks plus bank holiday
Responsible to: Chief Executive Officer
Responsible for: Youth work staff (including sessional staff and volunteers)
Job purpose:
To be responsible for the strategic planning, the operational management and the development of services of St Mary’s Youth Club co-ordinating its various projects to deliver and evaluate high quality youth work which improves the outcomes for marginalised young people in and around Islington.
Main Responsibilities
i) To develop, manage and co-ordinate delivery of St Mary’s Youth service through its programmes, projects and partnerships to the highest quality standards
ii) To build a service focussed on meeting the needs and expectations of young people and one that stimulates, encourages and enables their active participation in its delivery and development
Strategic Development
- Develop a strategy for SMICP’s Youth Service in line with SMICP’s organisational vision and objectives
- To develop new and existing youth initiatives and partnerships that will encourage more young people to participate in positive activities and enable young people to build strong links with their local community
- Consult with young people and maintain awareness of wider research information on changing needs and changing approaches to support young people’s development
- In conjunction with the CEO and possible delivery partners, develop good quality project proposals / applications for submission to donors, including budgets
Operational Management
- Develop and deliver comprehensive youth and play work programmes to meet agreed outcomes and budgets and which can cover day time, after school, evening and holiday periods
- Monitor and report to CEO and trustees on performance using agreed evaluation methodology. Propose and agree remedial plans of action with CEO where necessary
- Ensure that financial procedures are followed at all times
- Manage annual and project budgets of up to £100K per annum
- Develop a culture of controlled practice, using risk assessment techniques to ensure all Health and Safety responsibilities are met.
Staff management
- Manage and support staff and partner performance, promoting a culture of learning and ensuring quality delivery
- Design, deliver and evaluate training and planning days which build the skills and knowledge of youth workers and young leaders
- Working with SMICP HR Administrator complete regular appraisals and ensure compulsory training compliance
- In conjunction with CEO lead recruitment of project staff and volunteers
Working with Young People
- Spend 45% of time carrying out face to face work with children and young people
- Personally deliver and guide staff in delivering high quality youth work sessions with young people inspiring and empowering them to achieve their aspiration
- Enable young people to access the necessary resources and support both in and outside of SMICP to gain the maximum benefit from their engagement with us
Communications & marketing:
- Develop marketing and communications strategy for youth work, planning and delivering marketing for all youth work activities, including active use and updating of SMICP publications, website and social media platforms
- Regular liaison, networking and information sharing with funders and relevant local groups on projects within the post holder’s portfolio, notably with Islington Council
- Work with the CEO on developing and nurturing external partnerships with private sector stakeholders to create enhanced opportunities for young people’s development and to secure sponsorships
- Produce regular updates for the Chief Executive and SMICP Trustees
- To be an active member of the SMICP Senior Management Team, consulting with relevant staff to ensure co-ordination with their work, promoting SMICP internal information sharing and contributing to organisational learning through sharing of good practice
